The Los Angeles Dodgers have significantly strengthened their roster with the acquisition of star pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. This move has captured attention across Major League Baseball, as the trade deadline looms.
Tigers fans are notably upset over losing Skubal, a back-to-back Cy Young Award winner, but Chicago Cubs fans also have reasons to be frustrated. The Cubs were strong contenders early in the trade discussions for Skubal, especially with their starting rotation suffering numerous injuries during the 2026 season. Despite these challenges, the team has managed to lead the National League Wild Card race.

For Chicago, securing Skubal could have positioned them as a top contender in the National League, challenging the Dodgers as Los Angeles seeks three consecutive World Series titles. However, the Dodgers’ acquisition makes their roster even more formidable ahead of the postseason. This deal also means the Cubs missed out on an opportunity to sign a premier pitcher.
According to reports, in exchange for Skubal, the Dodgers sent prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith to Detroit. Hope, considered the top prospect in the trade, was originally a part of the Cubs’ 2023 draft class, later traded in a 2024 deal that brought first baseman Michael Busch to Chicago. Busch, who played an impactful role for the Cubs, inadvertently contributed to the Dodgers’ successful enhancement of their team by facilitating this trade.

The Dodger lineup could soon have a critical boost with Skubal likely making his debut in Chicago, during an upcoming three-game series starting Monday. Such an occasion adds another layer of competition for Cubs fans, who might witness Skubal play against them.
