DOJ Probes Voter Fraud in Michigan; Maryland Ballot Mix-Up Sparks Federal Review Calls

1 month ago 0

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating voter fraud in Wayne County, Michigan. The inquiry focuses on instances of fraudulent voting and non-compliance with the Help America Vote Act. In a separate case, a ballot mix-up in Maryland has renewed Republican demands for a federal review of the state’s voter rolls, following errors affecting 400,000 primary voters.

Maryland Ballot Mix-Up

A vendor error led some Maryland voters to receive the wrong party’s primary ballot. The state’s conservative Freedom Caucus is demanding that Maryland’s voter rolls be audited by the federal government. They argue that releasing the voter rolls is necessary to understand the mistake’s source and caution against reissuing 400,000 ballots.

The Maryland Freedom Caucus insists on transparency, stating, “The citizens have a right to know the exact process by which ballots will be scrutinized.”

The group accuses the Maryland Democrats and the State Board of Elections of voter suppression. They claim the mailing error undermines confidence in the primary election process.

Response from State Officials

Maryland’s State Administrator of Elections, Jared DeMarinis, assured the public of the state’s commitment to resolving doubts about mail-in voting’s accuracy. In a statement, DeMarinis emphasized the importance of integrity and transparency in the electoral process. Over 500,000 voters requested mail-in ballots, and the state is sending replacements to mitigate concerns.

“Every vote matters, your voice will be heard, and our elections will remain verified, open, transparent, and secure,” DeMarinis wrote.

Vendor Admits Mistake

The vendor, Taylor Print & Visual Impressions (TPVI), acknowledged the mistake and committed to rectifying it. Voters will receive correct ballots in the new mailing, and safeguards are in place to prevent duplicate voting. TPVI instructed voters to destroy the original ballots they received.

The error impacted ballots mailed before May 14, yet another instance of heightened scrutiny over Maryland’s election processes.

Republican Legal Action

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is actively pursuing legal action regarding Maryland’s voter rolls, alleging improper maintenance. The committee argues that counties report unusually high voter registration figures compared to Census data.

“The State Board of Elections has failed to do its job,” stated RNC Chair Joe Gruters, emphasizing the importance of accurate voter rolls.

The RNC’s lawsuit also claims that some counties have more registered voters than actual adult residents, which violates federal transparency requirements. This follows similar lawsuits in Hawaii and New Jersey.
