Early-Life Sugar Restriction Linked to Lower Alzheimer’s Risk

A study in the journal npj Aging suggests that consuming less sugar in the first 1,000 days after conception may reduce Alzheimer’s disease risk. Researchers found that those who experienced sugar restrictions during this period had a 46% lower chance of developing Alzheimer’s later in life compared to those not exposed to such restrictions. Further benefits included reduced risks of dementia, anxiety, and depression.

Wartime Sugar Rationing: A Natural Experiment

World War II sugar rationing in the UK created a unique opportunity to study sugar consumption’s effects. During the war and several years after, sugar was rationed heavily, leaving children under 2 without a sugar ration. Rationing ended in September 1953, and adult sugar intake nearly doubled.

Researchers analyzed health records from over 60,000 individuals born between 1951 and 1956. Participants were grouped based on sugar exposure in the womb, early childhood, both, or neither. Their health records from the UK Biobank revealed changes in their health as they aged.

Results showed a 27% decrease in dementia risk and reduced anxiety and depression risks for those with early-life sugar restrictions.

Examining Brain Health

Researchers analyzed MRI scans from 9,053 participants to see if sugar restrictions influenced brain health. After accounting for genetic and other factors, they found that those exposed to sugar rationing had younger-appearing brains on average by 0.39 years. Larger brain volumes in regions like the hippocampus and thalamus were also noted.

“These quasi-experimental findings suggest that early-life sugar restriction is associated with attenuated neurobiological aging and lower risks of dementia and psychiatric disorders,” the researchers wrote.

Understanding the Implications

Professor Fahad Hanna from Torrens University Australia explained that while these findings align with current knowledge, Alzheimer’s disease involves multiple factors. “The first 1,000 days represent a critical brain development period where nutrition affects metabolism, immune function, and more. Nevertheless, many elements contribute to Alzheimer’s disease,” said Hanna.

Hanna emphasized the study’s limitations: “The study shows an association, not causation.” Factors like socioeconomic conditions and broader dietary patterns might also affect dementia risk.

The study authors urged caution and noted that these results arise from a unique sugar rationing period not reflective of modern diets. Further research is needed in diverse populations.

Hanna acknowledged that the findings support current guidelines to limit added sugar in early life but warned against premature conclusions about Alzheimer’s prevention. “Occasional sugar exposure doesn’t determine cognitive health,” Hanna said, emphasizing the importance of those early 1,000 days for lifelong health.
