The Ebola virus has recently seen a troubling spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This has particularly affected the northeastern city of Bunia, where an outbreak was identified. Despite the severity, a comprehensive response has only just started to take shape.
Since the announcement of the outbreak, heightened global concerns have been evident. Borders have closed, and flights rerouted, even reaching as far as the United States. The Congolese World Cup team remains in quarantine in Belgium due to these developments.
Yet, despite the urgency, in Bunia itself, signs of a full-scale response such as medical tents and medical personnel in protective gear are scarce. Efforts to organize aid have begun. Workers outside the main hospital are busy erecting isolation wards to manage and treat those affected by the virus.
The virus is far ahead of us,
stated Ahmed Mahat, a manager with International Medical Corps, highlighting the fast spread of the virus. His team is building some of the crucial isolation facilities needed in the area.
The outbreak’s discovery came late, potentially two months after it began. As a result, the international response system now struggles to address the crisis in a timely manner.
Efforts to control the outbreak are concentrated in Ituri, the province where Bunia is located, a region with its own challenges due to ongoing conflicts.
