Egg Juror Demands Access to Sealed Records in Alex Murdaugh’s Trial

1 month ago 0

Myra Crosby, known as the “egg juror” from Alex Murdaugh’s high-profile double-murder trial, is pushing for South Carolina officials to unseal records related to allegations of jury tampering by a court official. Crosby, removed from the 2023 trial before deliberations, filed a motion on May 18 seeking the release of investigative files involving former Colleton County Clerk of Court, Rebecca “Becky” Hill.

The motion highlights the need for transparency, stating, “The public interest and the ends of justice are best served by transparency.” Crosby earned the “egg juror” nickname after she queried a judge about retrieving her eggs and purse upon her dismissal, causing laughter in court.

The case against Hill involves accusations of jury tampering, but prosecutors have concluded their probe without enough evidence to charge her. 11th Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard admitted during a plea hearing that the evidence was insufficient to pursue criminal charges.

The motion cites a protective order from January 2024, which favored public access but deemed confidentiality necessary to safeguard ongoing investigations. With investigations now concluded, Crosby believes this confidentiality no longer serves its purpose. Her attorney, Joseph McCullough, revealed submitting several Freedom of Information Act requests for the full investigative file, but these were denied, referencing the Supreme Court’s protective order.

In tandem, Alex Murdaugh’s defense team has filed a motion seeking similar access to sealed files. According to attorney Dick Harpootlian, Murdaugh’s lawyers want these records to support ongoing civil litigation against Hill. He differentiates Crosby’s request from their motion, highlighting Crosby’s lack of pending litigation.

Murdaugh’s defense accuses Hill of influencing jurors to achieve a guilty verdict. Crosby, dismissed from the panel in a moment that went viral, brought national attention after requesting permission to take eggs and her purse upon leaving.

Fox News Digital reached out to the South Carolina attorney general’s office for comments on the matter.
