Gunfire broke out during a Fourth of July fireworks display in Coney Island, resulting in eight injuries, including two young children. The incident occurred on Saturday night as crowds gathered to celebrate, according to police reports.
At around 10:37 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call from 2929 West 31st Street, near the Coney Island boardwalk. The fireworks had begun at 10 p.m., and the scene quickly turned violent. Police found eight gunshot victims, with ages ranging from six to 37 years.
A 21-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and remained in critical condition as of early Sunday. Among the victims were four boys aged six, seven, 12, and 14. The six-year-old boy suffered an abdominal wound, while the seven-year-old boy was shot in both legs. Despite the seriousness of their injuries, all were expected to recover.
The motivation behind the shooting remains unknown. Authorities have yet to identify a suspect, and no arrests have been made.
