Emerson Burke’s Impactful Final Season
Naperville Central’s Emerson Burke enjoyed an unforgettable final high school soccer season. The junior, bound for Michigan, will graduate early after a record-breaking year. Burke scored a school-record number of goals, leading the Redhawks to their first state championship game since 1995.
Sami Serpico, Fremd’s senior forward, shared her admiration, “They play her the ball, and she’s always doing something with it. She knows what to do and when to do it.”
Burke, honored as the 2026 Naperville Sun Girls Soccer Player of the Year, excelled in every aspect of the game. Transitioning from defense, she scored 40 goals and provided 17 assists, propelling her team to an impressive 22-1-1 record. “She took on the role she was waiting for and excelled,” Naperville Central’s junior midfielder, Nicole Sacek, noted. Burke’s presence elevated the team’s overall performance.
Contributions and Teamwork
Burke, also an All-American and Illinois Gatorade player of the year, credited her success to her teammates. “I’ve had a great season, but I wouldn’t have done it without everyone else,” she stated, emphasizing the value of collaboration. Despite her individual accolades, Burke recognized the efforts creating opportunities for her success.
Her outstanding performance shattered previous records. Burke’s 97 points in a single season eclipsed the former record of 61. Her 40 goals surpassed the previous high of 23 set by Callie Tumilty.
Although Burke played as a forward for only two seasons, she achieved remarkable results. She tied for second in all-time program history with 53 career goals and ranked third in career points at 148, alongside 42 career assists.
Admiration from Opponents and Coaches
“It’s very fun to watch her play,” Serpico remarked, acknowledging Burke as the best player she faced.
Burke’s blend of speed, determination, and shooting prowess left an impression. Opponents found her difficult to defend. “I try not to block her shots,” Sacek quipped, highlighting Burke’s formidable shooting skills.
Opposing coach Bill Lanspeary praised Burke’s capabilities. “She moves well off the ball, strikes it unbelievably well,” he said after Burke’s hat trick in a 5-0 victory. Naperville Central coach Troy Adams also noted her growth. “Her understanding of positioning and using her body has greatly improved,” he commented.
Dedication and Legacy
Burke dedicated time beyond regular practice, often seen at Knoch Park working on her skills. “Her drive and desire are evident,” Adams observed, noting Emerson’s effort beyond structured training schedules.
Her legacy as the fourth All-American in the program’s history aligns with past players Karen Richter, Casey Krueger, and Callie Tumilty. Burke hopes her influence extends beyond sports. “Many young supporters and former campers looked up to us,” Burke shared, emphasizing her desire to set an example off the field as well.
