Questions Arise After Presley Gerber’s Death in Rehab

When news emerged about the death of Presley Gerber, the 27-year-old son of Cindy Crawford, at a California rehab center, it prompted questions about addiction treatment. Despite access to extensive resources, Gerber lost his battle with addiction.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist, commented on the case, emphasizing the dangerous trend of allowing patients to determine their own care. On his podcast, Ask Dr. Drew, he stated that this approach is risky.

The patient seemed to be determining some of the care, Pinsky observed. That’s never good.

Ibogaine Treatment Controversy

Gerber had reportedly traveled to Mexico for an “ibogaine flood.” Ibogaine, a compound derived from an African shrub, is studied as a potential treatment for substance use disorders. However, it is not FDA-approved.

Dr. Pinsky explained that he has encountered patients using ibogaine or ayahuasca, often resulting in relapses and personality changes. Ibogaine remains a Schedule I substance in the U.S. due to risks like fatal heart arrhythmias.

The Limits of High-End Rehab

Pinsky highlighted that Gerber’s situation underscores the need for evidence-based treatment. He stressed that even high-end rehab centers cannot easily halt severe opioid dependence.

Opioid addiction is progressive and it ends in death, Pinsky warned, noting its prognosis can be worse than some cancers.

He and other experts urge families to seek fully licensed facilities using FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder.

Dangerous Periods Post-Rehab

Dr. Nicholas Kardaris, another addiction expert, pointed out the dangers immediately following rehab. He explained that relapses during this period can be fatal due to lowered tolerance.

Pinsky cautioned against allowing patients to control their treatment, as this can lead to poor outcomes. He advised seeking evidence-based treatments like buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone.

Medical professionals stress the importance of qualified care for addiction, recommending FDA-approved options.
