Andrew Lewis, an athlete renowned for his extreme sports performances, tragically lost his life in a BASE jumping accident. Lewis, aged 39, had gained fame for his daring routine during Madonna’s halftime show at the 2012 Super Bowl. The incident occurred in a remote canyon in southeastern Utah over the weekend, causing the deaths of Lewis and another individual, Danny Joe Kregle.
The accident took place in a secluded area known as Mineral Bottom within Grand County, Utah. Local sheriff’s office reported that both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Lewis, a resident of Moab, Utah, and Kregle were involved in a tandem BASE jump.
BASE jumping, the sport involved in the accident, is a high-risk activity where participants parachute off fixed objects. The term ‘BASE’ stands for buildings, antennas, spans, and earth. Lewis owned the BASE Jump Moab business, offering such excursions in the area.
According to Jamison Wiggins, the Grand County sheriff, when authorities arrived, Kregle died immediately upon impact. Lewis, however, survived for several hours while emergency medical personnel attempted to save him.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including how Lewis and Kregle might have been connected. Previous incidents have occurred at Mineral Bottom, a popular yet remote area that poses challenges, such as a lack of cellular reception and difficult access.
