The family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo is demanding answers after he was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston. The incident occurred during a targeted enforcement operation when officers attempted to pull over his vehicle. Officials accused him of using his van as a weapon. The ICE officer fired in self-defense, according to the agency.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo, described his father as a hardworking man who strived to give his family the American dream. The elder Salgado had been in the United States for 35 years and was a local business owner. On the day of the shooting, he was on his way to work when ICE surrounded his van.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and the FBI are investigating the incident. An ICE spokesperson noted that the actions were part of a federal operation to take Salgado Araujo into custody. However, his son and family demand clarity and justice.
Advocates for transparency, including the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), have initiated a petition for a full investigation. LULAC leaders criticized the official narrative of the shooting, drawing parallels to previous similar incidents involving ICE.
“We will have the truth about Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and we will not stop until we do,” Juan Proaño, LULAC National CEO, stated.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire emphasized the complexity of the situation, calling for a transparent investigation. He asserted that the city does not have the necessary authority to conduct its own inquiry. Officials from across the political spectrum have echoed calls for an independent, comprehensive review.
Locally, Houston officials have been critical of federal actions. Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones condemned the government’s immigration policies, while other city leaders voiced the need for transparency due to past incidents.
U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia stressed the importance of answers and accountability. She highlighted the need for clarity on why Salgado Araujo was targeted and whether deescalation was attempted during the encounter.
