San Francisco Giants Honor Jeff Kent with Jersey Retirement

The San Francisco Giants honored former player Jeff Kent by retiring his No. 21 jersey at Oracle Park. The event focused on Kent, recently inducted into the Hall of Fame. A notable moment occurred with his former teammate Barry Bonds.

Kent and Bonds, both former Giants players, were known for their competitive spirit. They once had a publicized altercation in the dugout during a 2002 game in San Diego. This incident gained significant attention as Bonds pushed Kent before teammates intervened. During the jersey retirement ceremony, the two playfully revisited this famous moment, showing camaraderie.

Before the Giants’ 7-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Kent reflected on the past. ‘I’ve said it many times,’ Kent stated. ‘He and I have never gone out to dinner, but I’ll go to war with that guy any day of the week. If Bonds and I weren’t fighting in the dugout, we wouldn’t have what we’ve got.’

Kent took a moment to send a message to Bonds during his speech. ‘Barry, keep with it, brother, you got a shot, man,’ he said, alluding to Bonds’ potential Baseball Hall of Fame induction.

Kent expressed appreciation for playing alongside Bonds. ‘I’m happy for Barry. I’m grateful that I got to play with a phenomenal player, and he knows, too. He’s got some baggage, and he’ll deal with it. He doesn’t need me to deal with it for him. He can do it himself.’

Bonds holds MLB’s all-time home run record with 762 and is a seven-time National League MVP. Despite these achievements, his association with performance-enhancing drugs has kept him out of the Hall of Fame.

In a 2024 statement during his induction into the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame, Bonds mentioned, ‘I don’t have to worry about those things no more in my life. I want to hang around my grandchildren and my children. Those hopes [of making the Hall of Fame], I don’t have them anymore.’ Bonds also had his No. 25 jersey retired by the Giants in 2018.
