The FBI seized electronic devices belonging to former congressman Eric Swalwell on Saturday night at San Francisco International Airport. Two sources familiar with the situation confirmed this to Fox News Digital. Following this, authorities searched Swalwell’s Washington, D.C. home on Sunday.
The devices taken included at least one cell phone, linked to an investigation into accusations of sexual misconduct against him. Swalwell was neither arrested nor detained. Fox News Digital contacted his attorney for comments.
DOJ Investigation and Resignation
The Department of Justice has initiated an investigation into allegations against Swalwell involving sexual assault. Previously, the former Democratic congressman from California resigned from Congress in April after several sexual misconduct claims surfaced. Before his departure, he faced possible expulsion from the legislative body, having served 13 years as a congressional member.
At least five women have accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct, including one who was formerly part of his staff. Amid these allegations, he also withdrew from the California governor’s race. During a press conference in Beverly Hills, Lonna Drewes highlighted accusations against Swalwell after his exit from the gubernatorial race and his congressional resignation.
Swalwell responded, “I will fight the serious false allegations made against me,” while acknowledging his past errors.
Allegations Involving Christine Fang
Recently, Swalwell attracted attention again after the White House disclosed details of an FBI investigation into his interactions with Christine “Fang Fang” Fang, alleged to be a Chinese intelligence operative. Swalwell admitted to engaging in “physical relations” with Fang on several occasions, according to FBI documents declassified by the White House’s new Government Transparency Task Force.
The records show their last encounter happened in March 2015. Swalwell, interviewed by the FBI in May 2015 and March 2016, faced questions about his association with Fang, who was suspected of ties to China’s Ministry of State Security.
Legal Actions and Further Allegations
In a separate lawsuit filed on November 25, Swalwell accused a housing official of improperly accessing Democratic mortgage records and using them to initiate criminal investigations, further complicating his legal battles.
