Fear of God Essentials hoodies have emerged as coveted status symbols among tweens and teens, leaving many parents astonished by the expense involved in keeping up with this popular trend. Kinna Thomas, a mother of two, described the clothing line as ‘a little bit expensive’ for her 11- and 12-year-old children, according to a Business Insider report.
The Fear of God Essentials line was initiated by Jerry Lorenzo in 2018, stemming from his original brand launched in 2011. Its items range in price from approximately $33 for T-shirts to $130-$200 for hoodies. Lorenzo explained in an interview with Ssense that, while the brand is not overtly Christian, his beliefs naturally influence its identity. He noted, “If someone asks me how Christianity fits into it, it just fits because it’s a part of who I am.” He emphasized that success for him means being comfortable enough to attend meetings in workout clothes rather than formal attire.
Thomas recounted her sons’ Christmas request for Fear of God Essentials items in 2022, recounting her surprise at their choice. Despite the initial sticker shock, she purchased the clothing for her teenage sons, Timmy and Julian, who now consider Essentials items a staple of their wardrobe. Julian remarked that the hoodies are popular at his school due to their clean, simple style that doesn’t seem overdone, while Timmy appreciated their comfort and understated elegance.
Parents appear to appreciate the brand for allowing children self-expression. Thomas shared that, although her children attend a Christian private school, they are permitted to wear Fear of God Essentials, unlike other brands. Amy Nachon, another mom, expressed less concern over the clothing’s cost, appreciating its professional appearance and her son’s expressed personal style. “Seventh grade is hard enough,” Nachon noted, voicing her support for her son’s clothing choices.
