Fetterman Criticizes Growing Influence of Socialism in Democratic Party

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman voiced concerns about the rising impact of socialists and communists within the Democratic Party. He cautioned that individuals like socialist streamer Hasan Piker are steering the party toward a more extreme future.

Fetterman stated that he would not endorse a communist simply due to their follower count on platforms like Twitch. He emphasized that identifying with communists who praise figures such as Mao or regimes like Cuba’s should be alien to Democrats. He believes this influence is undeniable.

Hasan Piker has become a significant figure on the left, supporting candidates like New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed, appealing to his extensive online audience. Piker has praised Mao Zedong and defended Cuba’s regime while criticizing the U.S. for the island’s hardships.

After speaking at the Israel on Campus Coalition’s National Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., Fetterman expressed that the Democratic Party’s current trajectory is concerning. He pointed to recent primaries as a crucial test of whether Democrats will continue to support candidates aligned with progressive ideals.

While Democratic establishment candidates saw successes in recent primaries, the high-profile Democratic Senate primary in Michigan saw Abdul El-Sayed, supported by socialists, face off against the more moderate Rep. Haley Stevens.

Fetterman expressed worry about the rising prominence of anti-Israel sentiments within the party, citing remarks from figures like Governor Newsom, who described Israel as an apartheid state. He criticized the party’s tendency to cater to fringe elements, asserting that these are core issues that should not be compromised.

Former President Donald Trump also voiced his concerns, stating that the Democratic Party has moved past socialism into communism. He warned that this poses a serious threat to the country, suggesting that a new ‘communist party of America’ could emerge, garnering around 10% of votes.

Trump shared these thoughts after the recent primary victories of socialists in New York, further highlighting a shift within the party.

Fetterman spoke at an event gathering over 800 pro-Israel students for advocacy training and discussions on supporting Israel. He noted how even pro-Israel Democrats find themselves pressured to qualify their support for the Jewish state.

He highlighted how terms like ‘Zionist’ have been used negatively by some on the left, turning what should be a matter of pride into something to be defended.

Fetterman also pointed to Iran as a dividing issue within the Democratic Party. He supported the Trump administration’s actions against Iran’s nuclear facilities and maintained his position against his party on war powers resolutions.

Fetterman concluded that the fundamental issue is Iran’s actions and the threat they pose, which every American president has attempted to address for nearly half a century.
