FIFA World Cup 2026: Controversy Surrounds Balogun’s Eligibility

4 weeks ago 0

Folarin Balogun, a prominent player for the U.S. Men’s National Team, participated in the Round of 16 match against Belgium in the FIFA World Cup 2026, following a contentious decision regarding his eligibility. Initially, Balogun was to miss the game due to a red card received in a prior match. However, FIFA authorized his participation just a day before the crucial game.

The decision came amid public debate over whether the red card was warranted. Despite an appeal and objections from Belgium, Balogun took the field, although the match resulted in a 4-1 loss for the U.S.

After the game, Balogun showed sportsmanship by speaking with Belgium’s manager, Rudi Garcia. Garcia expressed appreciation for Balogun’s gesture, stating, “He is not the one to blame, and that’s what I told him. I appreciate this player.”

According to The Athletic, FIFA’s disciplinary code allows for the suspension of a penalty if a judicial body finds grounds. The rules state that if the beneficiary commits a similar infraction during a probationary period, the suspension is revoked.

“If the person benefiting from a suspended sanction commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked by the judicial body and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement,” the code explains.

President Donald Trump revealed he requested a review of the red card from FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Trump described the incident as an accident between athletes, arguing that it wasn’t a deliberate foul.

Trump commented on the importance of having top players in games, saying, “I think it’s a terrible… if they wouldn’t allow a top player, maybe the best, maybe among the best on the team, to play, I think it would have had a big stain.” Though he made the request, he clarified that the committee ultimately decided Balogun’s eligibility.

Despite Trump’s intervention, the focus now shifts to Belgium, who will compete against Spain. Meanwhile, the United States team will aim for success in future tournaments.
