First Day of School Traditions Across the U.S.

Los Angeles, Calif.

At Micheltorena Street Elementary in Los Angeles, the first day of school began with special preparations for kindergarteners. Principal Nichole Sakellarion started a tradition 11 years ago to ease the transition for her youngest students by welcoming them a day early. They paired with fifth-grade ‘toolbox coaches’ who guided them throughout the year.

Fifth grader Gerald Gomez-Reina greeted new kindergartner Ian Patterson and helped him find his cubby. The mentors use tools like deep breaths and the ‘garbage can’ technique to manage emotions, assisting young students in feeling more connected and relaxed.

Parents experienced mixed emotions as they waved goodbye. However, few tears were seen among the kindergarteners, thanks to the support from their older peers. With fifth graders leading them by hand, the new school year commenced smoothly.

It’s really to make them feel a little more connected, to make their day a little smoother and to help them navigate the big emotions of starting in a new place.

Edmond, Okla.

Will Rogers Elementary in Edmond introduced a ‘bike bus’ for its students. Instead of traditional transportation, about 25 students and parents cycled to school from a nearby park. The initiative promotes physical activity and community, encouraging children to pedal rather than wait in car lines.

Hayden and Owen Raupe, among others, find biking a faster and more enjoyable option. They ride once a week, inspired by similar programs in Oregon.

Beaverton, Ore.

Beaverton High School, near Portland, opened a new building for the school year. The newly constructed facility incorporated several touches to create a welcoming environment. Principal Andrew Kearl ensured the space felt inviting, despite its size.

Special education teacher Leah Baird highlighted the adjustable lighting, which caters to students’ sensory needs. The school boasts large windows for ample natural light and colorful mosaics for orientation. Students like Andrew Perez expressed appreciation for the warmth of the environment.

Charles City County, Va.

In Charles City County, Virginia, Charles City Elementary School greeted young students on the red carpet. Preschool teacher Kelly Orrell read ‘The Kissing Hand’ to her class, addressing their anxieties about school.

The school held a boo-hoo breakfast for parents, offering a space to discuss their emotions as they settled their children. Jovan Howard shared his relief after dropping off his son Nolan, reflecting the excitement of starting a new school journey.

With mixed emotions from both children and parents, each school brought unique traditions to welcome the students back.
