Football Player Finds Venomous Snake in Helmet During Practice

An Arkansas high school football player made a startling discovery during practice last week. A venomous snake was found in the helmet he had been wearing for almost an hour.

The snake, measuring two feet in length, had managed to slither under the padding of the helmet unnoticed until the player felt unusual movement inside. This incident occurred on Thursday at Maumelle High School.

Maumelle High School Athletic Director, Kirk Horton, expressed his disbelief over the situation. He stated, “It really was just shock and disbelief. I’ve got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years.” The snake was identified as a cottonmouth, a highly venomous species known for seeking out concealed and dark places.

Officials from Maumelle Animal Services arrived promptly to manage the situation. The snake was safely placed in a tote bag and relocated to a nearby river. Initially thought to be a copperhead, officers later confirmed it was a cottonmouth.

Following the incident, the Maumelle Animal Shelter issued a cautionary message on Facebook. They advised the public, “Before putting on your helmet, shoes, gloves, or any outdoor gear, always give it a quick check first. It only takes a few seconds and could prevent a very scary encounter.” This advice aims to raise awareness about checking outdoor sports equipment to avoid dangerous wildlife encounters.

In Arkansas, the cottonmouth is considered the second most venomous snake. This species often prefers secluded and dark areas, making helmets a potential hiding spot.
