Former Judge Everett Wess Secures Democratic Senate Nomination in Alabama

1 week ago 0

Former Judge Everett Wess has emerged victorious in the Democratic Senate nomination for Alabama. His win sets him up to replace Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor this year.

In the Democratic Senate runoff, Wess defeated small business owner Dakarai Larriett. Both candidates had placed first and second in the primary last month out of a four-candidate field. Neither had secured more than 50% of the vote, leading to the runoff election that took place on Tuesday night, as reported by the Associated Press.

Looking ahead to the general election, Wess faces a tough challenge as the apparent underdog. He will be up against the Republican nominee, Rep. Barry Moore, who secured his position with support from former President Donald Trump. Moore defeated former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson in the Republican nomination runoff.

Alabama typically leans Republican, with the notable exception being the victory of former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones in a 2017 special election. It has been over 30 years since a Democrat has won a regular Senate election in the state.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, not seeking re-election, has turned his sights towards the gubernatorial race. Known for his past role as the head football coach at Auburn University, Tuberville’s move leaves the Senate seat open.
