The latest cease-fire agreement in Lebanon is already showing cracks. The deal, brokered by the U.S. under the Trump administration, hinges on Hezbollah halting its attacks. However, Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, has dismissed these terms, leading to continued fighting.
Under the agreement, Israel does not have to make any immediate concessions, and Hezbollah, backed by Iran, did not participate in the negotiations. This leaves Lebanon’s government little leverage over Hezbollah’s actions.
On Thursday, Hezbollah launched rocket and drone attacks on Israeli forces at the border. In response, Israeli airstrikes hit southern Lebanon. This ongoing violence reveals that the cease-fire has done little to alter the military positions of both sides.
Mr. Qassem has stated that any cease-fire must include Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, where Israeli forces have occupied significant areas since March.
With no end in sight, civilians continue to suffer as the conflict disrupts daily life.
