Georgia Mayor Jayden Williams Removed Amid Allegations

Jayden Williams, the former mayor of Stockbridge, Georgia, did not anticipate being removed from office earlier this month amidst allegations of misconduct. Speaking to WSB-TV, Williams expressed his surprise, stating, “I didn’t expect this. You know, maybe a censure, but definitely not a removal.”

Williams, 23, served less than a year as the youngest mayor in the city’s history before facing allegations related to his use of city funds and a relationship with an 18-year-old high school student. In a conversation with WSB-TV, Williams admitted, “I would have to somewhat agree” that the relationship might have been inappropriate.

Williams defended himself, asserting there was no breach of his oath of office as the relationship occurred before he officially became mayor. According to WSB-TV, he claimed the relationship was not of a sexual nature, although NBC News reported that he had acknowledged exchanging nude photos, considering it typical behavior for someone his age. The police report didn’t cite any criminal activity, as the student was legally an adult under Georgia law.

Issues regarding Williams’ financial conduct were also raised. He admitted using funds from the mayor’s $5,000 annual budget for personal purchases, clarifying to WSB-TV that these funds were not from the city’s general fund. He stated, “It was not intentional and I paid it back immediately.” He mentioned the similarity between the city purchasing card and his personal card, which led to the confusion. Williams subsequently replaced the cards to prevent future issues, as reported by Fox 5.
