Germany has stationed forces in Lithuania to protect the Baltic nation amid concerns about Russian military actions in Europe. This deployment is significant due to historical tensions, but it highlights Germany’s readiness to defend the region.
Liutauras Ceprackas, a chef in Vilnius, expressed his fears about the possibility of a Russian invasion. Lithuania’s army of 15,000 may not be enough to resist such a threat. There is also uncertainty regarding NATO’s commitment under American leadership.
Ceprackas, 51, appreciates Germany’s decision to station soldiers in Lithuania. He believes it acts as a deterrent, suggesting that harm to a German soldier would trigger a conflict with Germany, ensuring Lithuania’s safety.
The 45th Armored Brigade from Germany is the first complete battle brigade to be positioned outside Germany since the Nazi era. Its presence in Lithuania symbolizes swift changes in Europe in response to Russian aggression in the east.
This deployment also indicates Germany’s greater role in defending Europe, especially as U.S. support appears uncertain under President Trump. During a ceremony in Vilnius, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to build Europe’s largest conventional army.
This military presence in Lithuania underscores Germany’s renewed commitment to European security. It responds to increasing regional threats and reassures Baltic countries of Germany’s protective role.
