The Stanley Cup Final began with an electrifying clash on Tuesday night as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4. The game saw intense back-and-forth action, starting with Carolina’s Nikolaj Ehlers scoring on the first shot of the series. Ehlers further bolstered Carolina’s strength by adding another goal in the same period.
However, the Golden Knights fought back vigorously. Eventually, Tomas Hertl scored the decisive goal, marking his second game-winning score in just three games. This was particularly significant as Hertl had endured a 29-game goal drought earlier this postseason.
“I knew he wasn’t producing a lot, but I mean, I didn’t know how much, I guess,” said Joe Pavelski, Hertl’s former teammate, in reaction to Hertl’s goal drought information during a previous series game against the Anaheim Ducks.
Pavelski, who previously played with Hertl on the San Jose Sharks, shared his surprise when learning of Hertl’s struggle. Motivated by this revelation, Pavelski reached out to Hertl to provide some much-needed encouragement. According to Sportsnet, Hertl credited Pavelski’s call with helping him breakthrough, subsequently netting his first goal shortly thereafter.
Hertl’s performance has been crucial for the Golden Knights this postseason. He found the net in Game 4 against Anaheim, repeated this success in Game 5, and then delivered another game-winning goal against the Avalanche in Game 3. His timely resurgence is precisely what teams need when competing for the Stanley Cup, with players heating up at crucial moments.
Likewise, Brett Howden’s contributions have been noteworthy. Leading the team with 11 goals this postseason, Howden has built upon the 12 goals he scored during 58 regular-season games.
Pavelski reflected on his call with Hertl, expressing that while he didn’t offer any exceptional advice, his intention was to be there as a friend. “I just reached out more or less just to check in as a friend. He was already playing good enough to produce more than what had gone in for himself. It was just reminders of a couple little things he could do, and he’s just been really good.”
As the series progresses, the Golden Knights hope that players like Hertl and Howden continue to perform at their best, supporting the team’s Stanley Cup ambitions.
