Highland Park junior Mason Auslander entered his first varsity football camp without expectations. Competing for a position as cornerback, he understood the need to read both offenses and receivers effectively. Recognizing the importance of effort, Auslander embraced playing against older and bigger opponents.
His determination paid off, securing him a starting position. However, maintaining this spot required constant vigilance. With upcoming games, Auslander remained focused on performing well. His motivation intensified after a strong showing in an away game against Leyden, realizing his spot could be at risk if performance faltered.
“It was my first year playing against older kids, bigger kids, and I took the challenge. I had something to prove, and it became mainly about effort,” said Auslander.
A standout moment for Auslander came during a 37-16 victory over Deerfield. He demonstrated his defensive prowess with a critical interception, contributing to the team’s success. Coach Anthony Kopp acknowledged Auslander’s rapid development as a top defender.
Highland Park performed strongly in the season, boasting a 4-3 record and maintaining a solid defense against opponents like Glenbrook North and Maine East. In their game against Deerfield, the defense held the Warriors to 45 yards in the first half, establishing a commanding lead.
Auslander’s familiarity with opposing players, having played alongside them in earlier years, gave him an edge. Reflecting on the game against Deerfield, he shared insights into his strategic approach, knowing the tendencies of key players.
“I know the quarterback’s tendencies because I played with him in middle school, and I played with that receiver. My guy ran a go route, and I didn’t think the quarterback could throw it that far,” Auslander explained.
His dedication and understanding of the game were also evident in previous performances, such as a crucial interception during a 35-28 win against Evanston. Auslander emphasized the importance of confidence in his role as a cornerback.
The competitive atmosphere among five cornerbacks vying for the position in the summer motivated him further. Despite fears, Auslander’s growth in skill and confidence has been apparent on the field, as noted by his teammate, receiver Max Stevens.
“He’s done a great job in coverage, but he’s also one of our best tacklers,” Stevens remarked, highlighting Auslander’s improvement in technique and speed.
Auslander’s older brother Spencer, a former Highland Park player, played a significant role in shaping his experience. Growing up under the guidance of his brother, Mason understood the value of resilience and hard work, lessons that pushed him to excel.
