Ethics Investigation of Rep. Max Miller Announced

The House Ethics Committee has announced it is opening an investigation into Representative Max Miller, a Republican from Ohio, after he requested a probe into domestic abuse allegations tied to his reelection campaign. The committee declared on Tuesday that it is examining allegations involving potential domestic violence, abuse, or illegal drug use by Miller, which may breach congressional conduct codes.

The Committee notes that the mere fact that it is investigating these allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred.

Earlier on Tuesday, Miller expressed on social media his intent to ask for the investigation to clear his reputation from personal attacks. He stated, “In light of all the renewed interest in my family affairs, I am going to file my own paperwork for an ethics investigation into myself to clear my name from these horrific attacks on myself and family. I have absolutely nothing to hide.”

Miller’s Personal and Political Challenges

Miller is pursuing a third term in the House but faces a contentious public custody dispute with his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, daughter of Senator Bernie Moreno, also from Ohio. Moreno filed for divorce in 2024, citing violent and abusive conduct by Miller during their two-year marriage.

Court documents from earlier this year include allegations from Moreno, accusing Miller of scalding her with hot water, pushing her against a wall, and threatening her with a gun. She also claims he fractured their young daughter’s collarbone.

Miller has rejected all accusations. In a social media video over the weekend, he stated he has never been physically abusive toward Moreno nor held a gun to her head, characterizing the water incident as “horseplay” using a kitchen sink hose. “My former wife is engaging in a pattern of reporting incredible serious and destructive allegations with absolutely no evidence,” he insisted.

Regarding child abuse allegations, Miller declared, “I have never abused our daughter.” However, Senator Moreno responded sharply on social media, advising Miller to seek “serious psychological help,” and voiced concerns over his impact on their granddaughter.

Amid these controversies, Miller remains in the race for northeast Ohio’s congressional seat, despite calls to withdraw by Republicans aiming to maintain their fragile majority in the upcoming midterm elections. Although Miller secured the seat with a 15-point margin in 2024, GOP officials worry the allegations may aid Democratic contender Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker, in flipping the seat.
