U.S. Undercuts Venezuela’s Opposition Leader as She Attempts Comeback

María Corina Machado, an exiled Nobel Peace Prize winner from Venezuela, aims to return to her country devastated by earthquakes. However, U.S. officials, particularly from the Trump administration, have dismissed her actions as a “political stunt”, claiming it distracts from recovery efforts.

Recent attempts by Ms. Machado to communicate her intentions to both the Trump administration and the Venezuelan populace highlight her desire to participate in the nation’s reconstruction. Despite her efforts, her requests have been consistently turned down. This situation has transformed previously low-key tensions into an open conflict with one of Venezuela’s most popular political figures.

The viability of Ms. Machado mending her ties with the Trump administration is now questioned by some officials. Previously, she was esteemed as a leading figure by Washington’s Republican leaders. She once spearheaded the opposition group whose candidate reportedly won the 2024 presidential election, as observed by independent entities. Yet, this victory was marred by alleged government manipulation and voter suppression. Following the ousting of autocrat Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces earlier this year, her standing remains undetermined due to potential repercussions from Venezuela’s security apparatus.

Efforts to demonstrate her capability to lead the country to President Trump, who regards Venezuela as a key foreign policy achievement, have seen little success. An unprecedented move by Ms. Machado saw her presenting her Nobel medal to Mr. Trump as a gesture, even against the prize committee’s stance. Nonetheless, after previously living in hiding due to fears of arrest, she left to receive her Nobel Peace Prize and has yet to return to Venezuela.
