Ian Tosi’s Remarkable Comeback from Tommy John Surgery

3 weeks ago 0

Last spring, Ian Tosi from Mount Carmel underwent surgery, unaware of the surprise awaiting him. He initially expected a minor procedure, but he woke up having undergone Tommy John surgery. This led to a demanding rehabilitation process. Nearly 15 months later, the determined senior left-hander, signed with Miami, returned to the field for the Caravan. His efforts, persistence, and dedication made the struggles worthwhile.

“I’ve worked tirelessly to recover from the surgery,” Tosi stated. “I made it back in 11 months. That’s almost unheard of. I pushed myself for my team and feel proud of what I’ve accomplished.”

Tosi showcased his resilience on Wednesday, managing through errors and hits to restrict St. Laurence to four earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. His efforts helped Mount Carmel to overcome the top-seeded, nationally ranked Vikings with a 12-8 win in a chaotic Class 4A Brother Rice Sectional semifinal in Chicago.

Georgetown recruit Brady Holland and Wake Forest commit TJ McQuillan displayed impressive skills for the Caravan. Holland hit a three-run homer, contributing to the team’s offensive strength. Pancho Vazquez contributed with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while Cullen Winters went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Ian Tosi’s pitching performance against St. Laurence during the game on June 3, 2026, was captured by Vincent D. Johnson of the Daily Southtown. “It’s amazing, but we had confidence in our victory,” Tosi expressed. “We see ourselves as the better team.”

Following this victory, Mount Carmel will face Brother Rice, who secured a narrow 7-6 victory over Reavis, in the championship game scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Louisville recruit Cory Les led St. Laurence with a three-run homer and four RBIs, ending their bid for consecutive state titles after last year’s Class 3A triumph. Wisconsin-Parkside commit Danny Donovan added a solo homer to the mix. Despite these efforts, Tosi successfully kept the Vikings at bay, delivering what coach Brian Hurry anticipated on Wednesday.

“Ian has faced significant challenges over the past months,” Hurry commented. “Many haven’t seen what he’s endured to return to pitch for us. I’m incredibly proud of his courage. He faced a very tough lineup.”

The journey for Tosi began with the diagnosis of arm soreness, leading to the revelation of a partial UCL tear. Initially told he would only need a repair, Tosi was shocked after waking up post-surgery. “They had to proceed with the complete Tommy John reconstruction,” explained Tosi. “The longer-term solution is for the best. My arm keeps improving.”

Although unexpectedly ready for the season start, Tosi’s outings were initially limited. As the season progressed, he significantly picked up pace. He now boasts a 5-0 record, a 1.46 ERA, and 36 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings.

“The buildup was perfect,” Tosi remarked. “I assured them I would be ready for playoffs. I committed to delivering solid innings and helping us secure wins.”

Holland provided critical run support for Tosi, a three-run homer in the sixth inning extending the score to 12-5. “We needed to sustain our scoring,” Holland emphasized. “It’s rewarding to finally beat them.”

For Tosi, the victory was particularly meaningful. “It feels surreal,” Tosi shared. “I worked incredibly hard for this. Emotions ran high when we won. I’m thrilled to have helped my team succeed.”
