For the first time since 2014, the Indiana State Senate 6th District will have a fresh contender for leadership. Democrat Kate-Lynn Holley from DeMotte and Republican James “Jay” Starkey, also from DeMotte, are competing for the seat. The previous leader, State Senator Rick Niemeyer from Lowell, was defeated in the May primary elections.
Kate-Lynn Holley’s Campaign and Priorities
Holley, a real estate agent, decided to run for state senate because she believes many Hoosiers struggle to make ends meet. According to her, people across the political spectrum feel their voices are unheard in current politics.
This is Holley’s first political campaign, yet she feels her background in real estate and as a former professional wrestler contributes to her self-promotion skills. Her main focus is affordability, a broad issue she plans to tackle by improving Indiana’s housing affordability. Holley wants to prevent residents like teachers and healthcare workers from being priced out of homes.
Furthermore, she aims to reduce costs for utilities, groceries, and gas. She emphasizes the necessity for families to afford essential needs without financial strain from high mortgages. Supporting public schools is another priority for Holley, which includes reassessing Indiana’s state-funded voucher program. She questions why families earning $250,000 to $300,000 qualify, suggesting a need to evaluate financial allocations.
Despite Jay Starkey receiving endorsements from several state officials, Holley remains focused on her plan to connect with voters frustrated with current politics. She encourages them to overlook partisan divides and prioritize candidates with genuine interests at heart.
James “Jay” Starkey’s Campaign and Goals
James “Jay” Starkey, a construction project manager, did not respond to multiple media requests for comment. However, his campaign website outlines his commitment as a “true Christian conservative” aligned with President Trump’s agenda.
Starkey pledges to introduce accountable leadership in the State Senate, defend traditional family values, and advocate for further tax reforms. He also emphasizes strong immigration enforcement and increased school choice, promoting parental decision-making in education. Starkey opposes diversity, equity, inclusion, and critical race theory policies.
His priorities include fostering economic growth to support rural communities and ensuring local law enforcement has necessary resources. Starkey plans to address future increases in property taxes in the sixth district and combat significant price hikes due to data center developments in Northwest Indiana.
Starkey stresses the need for a responsive Senator who prioritizes the district’s residents over external political influences.
