Infantino’s Turbulent Tenure at FIFA

1 day ago 0

Gianni Infantino was envisaged as a reformer when he succeeded Sepp Blatter as FIFA president. He was expected to introduce transparency to an organization long plagued by scandal. Yet, Infantino’s reputation has suffered a blow due to a recent exposé that revealed a covert partnership with a family member of President Trump to sell a 20% stake of the World Cup to private investors.

Shortly after a remarkably profitable World Cup, which generated $15 billion in revenue, The Times of London reported Infantino’s clandestine efforts. He allegedly bribed FIFA’s 211-member associations, offering them a deadline to partake in his scheme to offload commercial and tournament rights to a firm headed by Joshua Kushner. The incentive was a $20 million payout, or a significantly lesser amount for those who declined.

Faced with scrutiny, Infantino retracted the proposal known as FIFA Forward Enterprise. However, further revelations indicated the plan was more intricate than first perceived. These developments severely hinder his campaign for reelection as FIFA president, a campaign once supported by over 200 FIFA members.

Countries such as Serbia, Sweden, and Wales have withdrawn their support. England’s Football Association is expected to follow. Additionally, UEFA, one of FIFA’s most influential confederations, is considering legal action against him. If these bodies align, Infantino might be unable to secure the 106 votes needed to retain his post.

From his debut as a reformist in 2016, Infantino’s past hinted at conflicting actions. Shortly after taking office, leaked documents showed he co-signed a suspect broadcast deal while at UEFA. While investigations cleared him, his association with influential leaders, including Russia’s Putin and Qatar, raised further questions.

Infantino was allegedly swayed by power dynamics, particularly during Trump’s presidency. His connections spanned rented offices in Trump Tower, participation in Trump’s inauguration, and trips on diplomatic missions. Though Infantino praised Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize, the accolade never materialized. Instead, he created and awarded Trump a FIFA Peace Prize.

His pursuit of power was evident when Ronaldo’s suspension was controversially lifted following a White House event, signaling Infantino’s deeper entanglement with political figures. Similar instances, including the lifting of a suspension for the U.S. striker Balogun, showed Infantino’s influence was significant.

Innovation marked Infantino’s tenure; he introduced hydration breaks, a halftime show for the World Cup final, and escalated ticket prices. Despite boosting revenue, his contentious plan involving private investors did not receive the desired support.

Infantino reportedly eyed a role in the investment fund post-2031, promising a significantly larger salary. While this wasn’t officially corroborated, discussions of potential roles, even as United Nations secretary-general, appear speculative if Infantino’s current position lapses.
