Madison Square Garden hosted the first NBA Finals game in New York since 1999. The New York Knicks entered with a 2-0 series lead against the San Antonio Spurs. This placed the Spurs in a critical position, needing a win to avoid a daunting 3-0 series deficit.
Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ star player and NBA Defensive Player of the Year, delivered an outstanding performance. He scored 32 points with 11-for-18 shooting, grabbed eight rebounds, provided six assists, blocked three shots, and made two steals. His efforts led the Spurs to a 115-111 victory on Monday night.
Despite the win, Wembanyama initially missed his postgame interview with Lisa Salters. Once he returned to the court, he emphasized his belief in his team, remarking, “the hardest is still to come.” The interview gained widespread attention because of the noticeable height difference. Wembanyama stands at 7-foot-4, making Salters almost invisible in the video frame.
Fans humorously remarked on the situation. One commented, “sis got her arm up like the statue of liberty and it’s still three feet below his mouth lololol.” Another joked, “Hilarious. Someone get this woman a stool or something 🤣.” A different fan said, “The Statue of Liberty is interviewing Wemby Lol 😂.”
De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs’ All-Star point guard, added humor by interrupting the interview, saying, “It’s midnight, man, let’s go!”
In the past, Fox shared insights into Wembanyama’s routine. After Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, he said, “Everything that you hear about Vic is true.” He noted that Wembanyama avoids blue light after 9 PM and reads books instead of using his phone.
Fox continued, “When we have games that end close to midnight, he comes to the locker room with blue light glasses on. Like, ‘I gotta get ready to get my recovery.’ He’s a 22-year-old doing the things that he does, and he truly loves the game and truly takes care of his body.”
The Spurs need to maintain focus to contend for the championship. Their victory against the Knicks, who haven’t lost since April 23, was a positive step. San Antonio aims to level the series in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.
