International Heist Targets Rare Russian Literary Works

2 weeks ago 0

Valuable works by notable Russian authors, such as Alexander Pushkin and Nikolai Gogol, have been disappearing from libraries throughout Europe. Currently, six individuals face prosecution related to these thefts.

This week, a Paris courtroom hosts the latest developments in an international book theft case. This case affected more than 170 pieces of rare Russian literature in libraries across Europe.

Alexander Pushkin, a 19th-century poet and novelist, plays a central role in this drama. The thefts targeted his literary works, valued at nearly $3 million, from libraries located in numerous countries, including the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland.

The defendants, six individuals of Georgian nationality, stand without literary backgrounds. French authorities have charged them for their alleged involvement in conspiracy and theft.

Investigations by European law enforcement suggest they belong to a broader network. Members include family and associates, who have traversed Europe using buses, fake identities, and falsified library cards. Their aim was to locate, study, and photograph rare Russian manuscripts, substituting originals with forgeries.

Among the accusations, French authorities hold the defendants accountable for actions involving the theft, and planning to steal, of rare cultural and historical works. Many of these are attributed to Pushkin, stolen from several libraries like the National Library of France. This trial emerged from a 2024 European law enforcement operation that apprehended several Georgians suspected of involvement in these crimes, leading to further arrests.

The affected libraries, including Estonia’s Tartu University Library, have become focal points of this investigation.
