Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Suffers Head Injury During Game Against Yankees

During the Blue Jays’ recent victory over the New York Yankees, Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. experienced an unfortunate collision, highlighting baseball’s physical risks. The incident occurred in the sixth inning of Friday’s 3-1 win at the Rogers Centre.

The Blue Jays were behind 1-0, with runners on first and second base as George Springer stepped to the plate. Guerrero was on first base, Nathan Lukes on second. Springer hit a weak ground ball to Yankees’ third baseman Ryan McMahon, who stepped on third base to retire Lukes and attempted to complete the double play at first base.

McMahon’s throw was off-target, hitting the dirt, and eluded first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. As Garcia scrambled to field the ball, his glove came off. Taking advantage, Guerrero dashed toward third base.

Garcia retrieved the ball and aimed for third base; however, without anyone to cover it. Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. was off the bag, resulting in Garcia’s throw going into foul territory. In a bid to retrieve the ball, Lombard collided with Guerrero, hitting him in the head and dislodging his helmet.

Guerrero appeared dazed but managed to score, leveling the game at 1-1. After reaching home, he required assistance from his teammates. Manager John Schneider stated that Guerrero had a mild headache from the collision and was removed from the game as a precaution.

“Kind of precautionary right now,” Schneider commented. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

Both McMahon and Garcia received errors for the play. McMahon remarked, “Just didn’t work out, man. Obviously led to a couple of runs for them and that hurts.”

Guerrero Jr., who recently inked a 14-year, $500 million deal with the Blue Jays, is experiencing a dip in performance this season. The six-time All-Star maintains a .263 average but has only managed seven home runs and 46 RBIs. The lack of power is striking since he has consistently hit 23 home runs or more in past seasons. Notably, this year he has not homered at home.

His presence is vital to the Blue Jays’ lineup, and losing him could be a blow as they aim for an American League Wild-Card spot. Toronto stands at 60 wins and 64 losses, preparing for the series’ second game against the Yankees (68-54) on Saturday at 3:07 p.m. ET. The team hopes to have Guerrero back on the field.
