Authorities are currently investigating a shooting that occurred near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, resulting in one fatality. The incident took place on Monday afternoon.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Columbus announced via social media they were responding to the event on the 2200 block of Albert Avenue. Initially, reports suggested the shooting occurred at the Alrahma Mosque, but police later clarified it took place at a nearby apartment complex.
An ATF spokesperson informed Newsweek, “This investigation is in its infancy.” Preliminary information indicated that individuals attending a funeral at the Alrahma Mosque located at 2226 Albert Avenue were involved when gunshots were fired by unknown persons.
The Columbus Dispatch reported the shooting unfolded during a mosque funeral, with a photographer present at the scene. Local TV coverage displayed police attempting to calm a crowd as community members spilled onto the street amid reports of arguments and shoving.
Investigators confirmed one fatality related to the incident. Details of a second potential victim remain unconfirmed. ATF Special Agents are collaborating with the Columbus Division of Police in the investigation, and further details will be released as they emerge.
Police later verified to Newsweek that the shooting happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex adjacent to the mosque. A representative stated, “While initial information suggested mosque involvement, the investigation indicates it was not a targeted attack against the mosque, nor did it happen on mosque property.”
The FBI has offered its resources to assist in the inquiry, though it advised awaiting further updates from local law enforcement.
Additionally, Newsweek reached out to the Alrahma Mosque and the Ohio Department of Public Safety for comments on Monday afternoon.
