Iran Mourns Ayatollah Khamenei Amid Crisis

Iran entered a period of public mourning with the viewing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s casket, following his death at the onset of U.S.-Israeli hostilities. On Saturday, mourners gathered in Tehran to honor the former supreme leader at an elaborate state funeral.

Large crowds assembled at the Grand Mosalla mosque at dawn, marking the start of a six-day commemoration. Millions are anticipated to join the processions as Khamenei’s body travels through various Iranian cities.

Witnesses, including journalists from The New York Times, described the emotional responses of supporters, many of whom were moved to tears upon seeing the coffins of Khamenei and his family members. Encased in glass and draped with Iranian flags, the caskets were prominently displayed with the ayatollah’s positioned above the others.

These events unfold amid a tumultuous backdrop for Iran. The nation has faced significant antigovernment protests this year, met with strict repression, followed by a harsh conflict with both the United States and Israel. Israeli strikes killed Khamenei and other key Iranian leaders on the war’s first day.

While supporters mourn Khamenei’s passing, others express frustration over the costly funeral proceedings. Throughout a nearly 37-year tenure, Khamenei’s rule was marked by stifling dissent and economic challenges.
