Pete Alonso of the Baltimore Orioles attempted a risky play during a game against the Detroit Tigers, which ended poorly for the first baseman. During the first game of a doubleheader, Dillon Dingler of the Tigers hit a ball directly towards Alonso in the top of the fourth inning, in what should have been a straightforward out.
Instead of catching the ball for the out, Alonso opted to allow it to drop, hoping to turn a double play with a runner on first. This decision backfired. Alonso misjudged the bounce, leading to an error and both runners being safe.
Had Alonso succeeded, his decision could have been praised as intelligent. Instead, it resulted in a costly mistake, enabling Detroit to score two runs. Despite this, the Orioles managed to secure a 5-3 victory, breaking a three-game losing streak.
The game was a challenging one for Alonso. In addition to his error at first base, he went 0-for-4 at the plate. Despite producing 10 home runs and 32 RBIs this season, his batting average reflects inconsistency, standing at .224.
Alonso joined the Orioles in the offseason, signing a five-year, $155 million contract with an annual average salary of $31 million.
