Japan has advanced significantly in the World Cup, nearing the knockout stage for the fourth time in succession. This advancement comes after a resounding 4-0 victory over Tunisia in Group F.
The game marked a historical achievement for Japan’s soccer team, delivering their highest score in any World Cup match. The game saw Ayase Ueda scoring twice alongside goals from Daichi Kamada and Junya Itō, placing Japan equal on points with the Netherlands. However, the Netherlands currently lead Group F due to having scored one additional goal in their matches.
After this defeat, Tunisia faces elimination from the tournament. Japan is secured at least third in the group, which might be sufficient for progressing to the knockout stage.
Japan’s Ayase Ueda scores the fourth goal against Tunisia during the World Cup Group F soccer match in Guadalupe on June 20.
The Eagles of Carthage appointed Hervé Renard, a two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner, in an effort to recover from their earlier 5-1 loss to Sweden. Nonetheless, Tunisia struggled against Japan’s rapid offensive and did not manage to create clear scoring chances.
Kamada initiated the scoring swiftly, with a goal in the fourth minute, setting a record for Japan in World Cup history. Positioned optimally for Keito Nakamura’s cross, Kamada scored his second goal of the tournament with relative ease.
Ayase Ueda added to Japan’s lead in the 31st minute, driving the ball from midfield towards Tunisia’s box. Despite bypassing several potential passes, Ueda delivered a striking shot from outside to secure a second goal. The Feyenoord striker had a notable club season, scoring 24 goals in the Eredivisie and earning the league’s top scorer award.
In the 69th minute, Junya Itō furthered Japan’s lead with a goal following Ueda’s assist. Itō maneuvered past Tunisia’s goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen to score a third goal calmly.
Ueda clinched Japan’s victory with his second goal in the 83rd minute, utilizing a looping header. Japan will face Sweden in Dallas on Thursday, while Tunisia is set to challenge the Netherlands in Kansas City simultaneously.
