Joe Theismann Discusses NFL’s Shift from Tradition

Joe Theismann, a Super Bowl champion, highlighted significant changes in the NFL’s approach to broadcasting games. The league has broadened its schedule to include holidays and international locations, moving away from traditional Sunday afternoon matches.

NFL’s Expanded Broadcast Schedule

Theismann noted the shift away from traditional viewing options. In the past, networks like ABC, NBC, and CBS exclusively broadcast NFL games. Today, a variety of streaming services, including YouTube, Amazon, and Peacock, offer games. This change provides team owners more profit avenues, according to Theismann.

Games now occur on multiple nights, offering fans various opportunities to watch. Enthusiasts once eagerly anticipated Sunday games, but now options extend throughout the week. This season’s opener is scheduled for a Wednesday, with another game in Melbourne, Australia on a Thursday. Moreover, the NFL has added a Thanksgiving Eve game, Black Friday events, and matches on Christmas Day.

Fan Access and Adaptation

Theismann acknowledged that easier access to games benefits fans, allowing them to choose what to watch instead of reading recaps. Nevertheless, he admitted some might miss the past’s routine. He advocates for adapting to these changes due to life’s evolving nature.

American Century Championship

Theismann, who has participated in 36 of the 37 American Century Championships, reflected on the event’s significance. Set to play again, he discussed the excitement of golf enthusiasts participating alongside celebrities. The tournament takes place from July 10-12 at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe.

The event, broadcast on NBC and Peacock, has raised over $8 million for charities. American Century Investments contributes significantly to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, thanks to efforts by CEO Jonathan Thomas.

Theismann shared his enjoyment of connecting with fellow participants, mentioning conversations with figures like Jerry Rice, Tony Romo, and actor Miles Teller. He praised “Top Gun: Maverick” as his favorite film, further highlighting his diverse interests beyond football.
