Ohio State head coach Ryan Day shared concerning news regarding quarterback Julian Sayin. Sayin will be sidelined indefinitely with a shoulder injury. Initially, Day mentioned Sayin would miss ‘several weeks’ after injuring his throwing shoulder during Ohio State’s narrow 19-15 victory over Indiana last weekend.
The timeline for Sayin’s absence has changed from weeks to an indefinite period. Day acknowledged that the team is preparing for Sayin’s unavailability for the regular season and potentially the College Football Playoff.
First off, we’re not setting any timeline for his recovery, but he is out indefinitely,” Day stated. “We are focusing on giving Julian and his family privacy during this time. We’re planning as if he won’t be available for both the regular season and postseason.
Without Sayin, the team is adjusting its strategy. True freshman Luke Fahey, who stepped in after Sayin’s injury, will continue as the Buckeyes’ starter. The team benefits from a bye weekend before their upcoming game against No. 16 USC on Halloween.
Reflecting on Fahey’s role, Day commented, “Luke’s presence means we might need to tweak our approach, but the bye week allows us to recalibrate and strategize.”
Sayin’s injury occurred when Indiana’s Mario Landino struck his throwing shoulder, leading to a fumble. Sayin left for the locker room and later reemerged on the sideline with his arm in a sling. While the precise nature of the injury is not disclosed, the implications suggest a serious concern, given Sayin’s potential absence for the season.
This season, Sayin, projected as a top NFL Draft prospect, amassed 1,772 yards with 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
Now, attention turns to Fahey, a three-star recruit from California, to assess if he can maintain Ohio State’s standing as the No. 3 collegiate football team.
He’s confident, athletic, and competitive,” Day said about Fahey. “The moment didn’t overwhelm him.”
