Justin Gaethje’s Triumph at UFC Freedom 250

1 week ago 0

Justin Gaethje achieved a remarkable victory at UFC Freedom 250 in Washington, D.C. He defeated the previously undefeated champion Ilia Topuria in a UFC Lightweight Championship unification bout held outside the White House on Sunday. Despite entering the match as an underdog, Gaethje dominated from the opening bell.

The 37-year-old fighter inflicted significant damage on Topuria early in the fight. He continued his aggressive assault with a series of powerful kicks and punches that left Topuria’s face bloodied. After four rounds of intense action, someone from Topuria’s corner stopped the fight due to the damage sustained. Topuria left the ring with the help of his team and later received medical attention at a hospital.

Gaethje’s victory secured him the title of undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion. Yet, he avoided commenting on whether he would retire post-fight. Former champion Demetrious Johnson suggests that Gaethje should consider this victory as the perfect moment to retire.

“There is nothing left for Justin Gaethje to do. He’s made so much money, he is an undisputed lightweight champion,” Johnson stated in a video on his YouTube channel after the event.

Johnson emphasized that retiring now would preserve Gaethje’s health and honor his accomplishment. Johnson himself is a former UFC Flyweight Champion, whose career spanned from 2006 to 2023. He retired with a 25-4-1 record and will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame soon.

Following Gaethje’s victory, Joe Rogan interviewed him in the cage. When asked about retirement, Gaethje mentioned he promised his mother he’d decide after the event. With a 28-5 career record, including 21 knockout wins, Gaethje has had an impressive journey. Sunday’s win over Topuria marked his third consecutive victory.

Many athletes face the challenge of ending their careers on a high note. Some continue seeking victories, risking an unfavorable end. For Gaethje, retiring as a champion might represent the ideal closure to his MMA career.
