Kate Douglass Sets New World Record in Women’s 50-Meter Freestyle

On Saturday at the Pan Pacific Championships, Kate Douglass established a new world record in the women’s 50-meter freestyle. The event took place during the preliminary heats in Irvine, California, where the 24-year-old swimmer from Pelham, New York, clocked an impressive time of 23.49 seconds.

Douglass broke the previous record of 23.55 seconds set by her teammate Gretchen Walsh at an international meet in Rome in June. This achievement marks the second time Douglass has lowered the world record. She first did so on June 19 at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis with a time of 23.59 seconds. However, nine days later, Walsh reclaimed the record before Douglass’s recent triumph.

A distinguished athlete, Douglass is a five-time Olympic medalist. Notably, she secured a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2024 World Championships. Although she did not participate in this event during the 2024 Paris Games, her performances continue to inspire.

In the same heat, Walsh posted a time of 23.78 seconds, ranking them as the top two qualifiers for the evening final on the competition’s last day in Irvine. This record-setting achievement is the first individual world record established at the meet. Swimmers from various countries including the U.S., Australia, Canada, Japan, and China participated in the event.
