Keith Urban, known for his versatility, is taking a turn with his 2026 album, ‘Flow State.’ This album blends his country roots with yacht rock influences, featuring an original song with Michael McDonald and covers of ten soft rock classics from the late ’70s and early ’80s. Songs like Player’s ‘Baby Come Back’ and Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers’ ‘Just the Two of Us’ define this genre.
Urban himself admits surprise at the direction of his album. ‘I didn’t either, no,’ he laughed when discussing the unexpected twist of his latest work. The journey began at The Sound, Urban’s restored studio in Nashville.
Recording and Collaboration
Urban, along with producer Dann Huff and session musicians, dove into yacht rock during their sessions. ‘I suggested doing a yacht rock song because I’ve always loved the genre,’ Urban stated. Initially planned as an EP, the sessions expanded into a full album. Urban emphasized the joy and spontaneity of recording, highlighting the genre’s ease and fluidity. ‘Flow State’ maintains Urban’s unique style while honoring the originals. An example is ‘Summer Breeze,’ which features an extended outro with keyboard and acoustic guitar, crafted with engineer Mark Dobson.
Collaborations play a key role in ‘Flow State.’ Little Big Town and John Mayer contributed to covers like Walter Egan’s ‘Magnet and Steel’ and Bread’s ‘The Guitar Man.’
Nostalgia with Michael McDonald
The album includes an original track, ‘We Go Back,’ a nostalgic tune about a couple reuniting after years apart. Written with BRELAND, Sam Sumser, and Sean Small in 2020, Urban aspired to have McDonald sing the chorus. Fast forward to 2026—Urban’s manager encouraged collaboration with McDonald, leading to ‘We Go Back.’ Urban reflected, ‘It was surreal to have Michael sing a song we imagined together.’
Emotional Resonance in Challenging Times
Urban describes the covers on ‘Flow State’ as both nostalgic and soothing amid global upheaval and personal challenges. Following his divorce from Nicole Kidman, Urban expresses gratitude for the album’s timing and its role as a balm amid stress and division.
‘Flow State’ is an unexpected collection, bringing together disparate moments during tumultuous times. Urban appreciates the album’s message, stating, ‘The beauty of a song that connects people, offering a moment of reflection and escape.’
