Key Season Ahead for Washington Commanders and Tress Way’s Potential Farewell

The upcoming season holds significant importance for several members of the Washington Commanders. Jayden Daniels, selected as the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, aims to rebound after injuries hampered his performance in 2025. His gameplay this fall is crucial as he looks toward negotiating a new contract at the season’s end.

Head coach Dan Quinn, who once guided the Commanders to the NFC championship in 2024, now faces pressure to improve after a disappointing previous season. The addition of two new coordinators means the team expects better performance in his third year.

This season is notably special for Commanders’ punter Tress Way as it could possibly be his last in the league. The longest-tenured player on the team, Way informed general manager Adam Peters and head coach Quinn about his potential retirement. He shared his reflections with reporters, as captured by JP Finlay of NBC Sports.

“Pro Bowls are sweet. Having that for the rest of my life, just a few jerseys hanging up, will be really special for me,” Way remarked. “And this year too is special because I am pretty sure this is going to be my last season.”

Way wanted to ensure transparency by discussing his plans with Peters and Quinn beforehand. He expressed a feeling of nostalgia, noting,

“Feel like everybody’s cutting onions all the time around here.”

Prior to the start of the season, Way was named team captain alongside Jayden Daniels, wide receiver Terry McLaurin, linebacker Frankie Luvu, and safety Jeremy Reaves.

Tress Way initiated his NFL career with the Chicago Bears in 2013 as an undrafted free agent, later joining Washington in 2014. The former Oklahoma Sooners standout, now 36, received second-team All-Pro honors in 2019 and has been nominated to the Pro Bowl three times, including the 2025 season.
