The New York Knicks have ended a long-awaited victory drought by securing their first NBA title in 53 years, triumphing over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
Entering the 2026-27 NBA season, the Knicks carry the weight of expectations as reigning champions. NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins has pinpointed the Philadelphia 76ers as the primary threat in the Eastern Conference.
The 76ers have bolstered their roster with two significant additions during the offseason. They acquired legendary NBA superstar LeBron James through free agency and caught all-star Jaylen Brown in a major trade with the Boston Celtics, rivals in the Eastern Conference. These acquisitions complement a squad already featuring standout players Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and rising star VJ Edgecombe.
“The 76ers are the team to dethrone the Knicks,” stated Perkins on ESPN’s NBA Today.
Before adding James and Brown, the 76ers reached the second round in the playoffs last year. They secured a first-round victory against the Celtics, but were ultimately defeated by Jalen Brunson and the Knicks in a decisive sweep.
The 76ers will open their 2026-27 regular season with a challenging game against the Knicks on October 20.
