Love Island USA Winners Share Their Journey and Future Plans

Trinity Tatum and Bryce Alakai, winners of “Love Island USA” season eight, entered the show as individuals seeking love and emerged as a couple. Their relationship culminated in a touching moment when they exchanged their first “I love you” on national television. The couple appeared on “TODAY” for their initial TV interview after leaving the villa in Fiji. During the season finale, they were declared winners and awarded a $100,000 prize.

Bryce Dettloff, who uses the name Bryce Alakai on the show, discussed the intensity of emotions, anxiety, and pressure that the show entailed. He highlighted how these challenges brought him closer to Tatum. “One thing that brings us closer is that comfort in those moments. We look at each other during challenges, and I can confide in her and feel safe,” Alakai said.

“Bringing that in the world, it’s almost like, life is the challenge,” he added.

The couple spent six weeks on “Love Island USA,” isolated with other contestants. They coupled up on the first day, although both considered other relationships briefly. Tatum, however, felt Alakai’s personality made her want to focus on their relationship. Their age difference posed an early challenge: Tatum is 22, and Alakai turned 30 during filming.

Despite the age gap, Alakai praised Tatum’s maturity. “I felt so comfortable with her,” he said. “Her level of comedy and intelligence made the age gap disappear in my mind.” Tatum agreed, “I honestly forget,” she said, noting that his blend of humor and seriousness is appealing.

The rapid pace of their relationship surprised some, but Tatum explained it felt natural. “We spent six weeks together, 24 hours a day, having intimate conversations. It made perfect sense,” she said. “We’re so alike that it’s like, we’re always in sync.”

Since leaving Fiji, the couple faces separation anxiety. “Our connection has affected us outside of the show too,” Alakai noted. “Whenever she’s away, my heart rate goes up.”

As they adjust back to life, Alakai mentioned the overwhelming response from others: “We were in Fiji less than 20 hours ago. Fifty days without phones or the outside world, it’s been unreal to see everyone’s reactions.” Tatum plans to spend time in Los Angeles with Alakai. “I definitely want to be wherever Bryce is,” she said. “I don’t like being away from him.”
