Mark Sanford Enters South Carolina Senate Race

Mark Sanford, a former congressman and governor from South Carolina, announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. Sanford, known for his criticism of President Donald Trump, officially launched his campaign for the seat once held by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. In a campaign video, Sanford stated, “We’re at a tipping point, and that’s why I’ve decided to run for the U.S. Senate. I’d ask that you look at my record in Congress and as governor in watching out for your family’s future.”

Sen. Darline Graham, filling her late brother’s term, also announced her candidacy for a full term in the Senate. She received Trump’s complete endorsement following a meeting at the White House. Despite this endorsement, several South Carolina Republicans have joined the race.

Rep. Ralph Norman, who recently ran for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, declared his Senate campaign, followed by Rep. Russell Fry and businessman Mark Lynch. The special Republican Senate primary is scheduled for August 11, with a runoff planned for August 25 if required.

Sanford served three terms in the U.S. House during the 1990s and two terms as governor, gaining national attention. He faced a scandal in 2009 but returned to Congress in 2012, serving three more terms. He briefly challenged Trump in the 2020 presidential primaries, emphasizing the nation’s debt as a major concern in his Senate campaign.

While Sanford avoids mentioning Trump, Fry and Norman express strong support for the former president. Fry promises to be “President Trump’s strongest ally,” while Norman seeks to continue Lindsey Graham’s legacy and support Trump’s legislative goals.

Norman has endorsements from Trump allies, including Sens. Mike Lee and Rick Scott. He also has backing from the conservative group Turning Point USA and Rep. Nancy Mace.

Despite Trump’s support for Darline Graham and her recognizable name, the primary race remains competitive. Political strategist Ryan Williams noted the influence of Trump’s endorsement, though it’s not guaranteed success.
