Matt Gogel, a golfer on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, has been suspended for six months by the organization for placing bets on PGA Tour events. Gogel released a statement explaining he placed ‘small recreational wagers on golf’ without intending to do so in 2024. He emphasized, ‘I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events, or any tournament in which I participated.’ The statement was released by the PGA Tour.
Gogel further expressed, ‘I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake, and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions.’ His suspension is scheduled to begin on Sunday and will last until February 22, 2027.
The PGA Tour confirmed that Gogel did not bet on any tournament he participated in. However, he breached the Tour’s integrity program, which prohibits wagering on PGA-sanctioned events. In 2023, Vince India and Jake Staiano on the Korn Ferry Tour faced similar suspensions for betting on PGA Tour competitions.
Gogel, 55, achieved one PGA Tour victory in his career at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2002. Following his first career on Tour, he transitioned to a role as a golf broadcaster with The Golf Channel and CBS Sports. At 50, Gogel joined the PGA Tour Champions, the senior circuit of the golf organization.
Gogel currently ranks 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points race.
