Mexico’s World Cup Dream Dashed by England

MEXICO CITY – Mexico experienced a challenging defeat in their World Cup round of 16 match against England. The game took place on Sunday night at Estadio Azteca, where 80,824 passionate fans cheered for the home team.

Despite the advantage of playing at home and having most of the second half with a man advantage, Mexico lost 3-2. England’s Jude Bellingham scored twice within 98 seconds in the first half, a challenge Mexico could not overcome after previously maintaining a clean sheet in their first four matches.

“To dream and then fall like this hurts deeply, but the players should leave with their heads held high,” Coach Javier Aguirre said. “They gave it their all on the pitch, but it wasn’t meant to be today.”

The defeat was particularly bitter, as hopes were high for Mexico to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since they last hosted the World Cup in 1986. Since then, Mexico has been eliminated in the round of 16 on eight occasions.

Coach Javier Aguirre confirmed he would step down after his third tenure. He will be succeeded by Rafael Marquez, former Barcelona defender and Aguirre’s assistant during this World Cup. Aguirre expressed his confidence in Marquez, calling him a valuable coach poised to succeed.

This defeat marks only the third competitive loss at Estadio Azteca since its opening in 1966, alongside previous losses to Costa Rica in 2001 and Honduras in 2013.

Ramiro Caballero, a local fan, expressed his frustration, stating, “I am sad, we had everything to win the match. England did not play well, they had five shots on goal and scored three. It was the perfect scenario to take the next step and now we must wait for that victory.”
