Miami Dolphins Secure First Win of 2026 Season Against Jets

7 days ago 0

The Miami Dolphins remain the only NFL team with a perfect 17-0 season, setting a benchmark they don’t intend to let go of with an 0-17 season. As the 2026 season began, some believed that Jeff Hafley’s first year as head coach might result in a winless season. However, the Dolphins claimed their first victory of the season on Sunday, securing a 28-25 win against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

Head Coach Jeff Hafley, leading the Dolphins in East Rutherford, N.J., demonstrated determination to avoid a winless start or even a 0-6 record, a situation the team hasn’t faced since 2019. Quarterback Malik Willis played a pivotal role, passing for two touchdowns and running for another, showing notable resolve post-bye week.

The Dolphins opened the game strongly, scoring on their first two drives. Willis connected with rookie Caleb Douglas, who returned from an injury, for a seven-yard touchdown. Running back Ollie Gordon, stepping up after De’Von Achane’s injury, furthered the lead with a touchdown run, concluding a 14-play drive.

The Jets, led by Geno Smith, aimed to improve their 2-4 record. Smith’s accurate passes, including a 52-yard completion to Omar Cooper Jr. and a touchdown to tight end Mason Taylor, tied the game early at 7-7. Yet, the Dolphins led 21-7 by halftime as Willis scored with a two-yard scramble.

In the game’s closing moments, Smith kept the Jets competitive, connecting with Taylor for a touchdown and a two-point conversion, narrowing the gap to 28-25. The Dolphins, however, capitalized on a crucial fourth-and-1 situation. Willis secured the first down needed to clinch the victory and initiate celebrations.

Despite this win, Miami faces a challenging road to the playoffs. But the pressure of securing their first win is now lifted. Malik Willis’s performance was crucial, ensuring the team overcame the initial winless streak.

Conversely, the Jets, under Aaron Glenn, face their own challenges, dropping to a 2-5 record. Although Smith displayed skill with 23 completions on 30 attempts for 287 yards and three touchdowns, the team struggles with consistent performance.
