Michigan Democratic Senate Hopeful Faces Criticism for Campaign Choices

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed faces scrutiny for aligning with Hasan Piker, a controversial online influencer. Piker is known for past offensive comments about 9/11 and antisemitism. This association worries some Democrats who fear it might harm their prospects in the pivotal Michigan Senate race, especially among swing voters.

As the United States marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, El-Sayed’s public campaign schedule initially omitted any remembrance events. Instead, it included festive activities like a Mexican festival, a farmers market, and a county fair. Despite this, his campaign later confirmed to Fox News that El-Sayed plans to attend a 9/11 memorial event, even though it was not listed on his website.

El-Sayed, a progressive candidate in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, has insisted on participating in remembrance activities. His campaign stated that he regards the 9/11 terrorist attacks as a heinous act against America’s freedom, reiterating his commitment to joining Michiganders to commemorate the anniversary.

The campaign’s listed events, such as Fiesta Mexicana and the Allegan County Fair, have a celebratory tone. They encourage attendees to embrace Mexican culture and partake in entertainment and food. El-Sayed’s campaign was noted for instructing supporters to enjoy cultural music and cuisine.

Yet, the choice of campaign activities during a sensitive period has raised eyebrows. El-Sayed has a complex past with the 9/11 subject, compounded by his association with Piker. A resurfaced clip of Piker claiming America “deserved” 9/11 prompted El-Sayed to criticize the comment as foolish but he did not distance himself from Piker entirely.

Further complicating matters are old blog posts and social media entries of El-Sayed, which have drawn additional controversy. In these, he reportedly likened 9/11 to events like January 6 and criticized former President Trump in stark terms. He urged Americans to channel their 9/11-related anger toward the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed regret over war-related casualties following 9/11.
