MLB Issues Suspensions Following Nationals-Red Sox Brawl

Major League Baseball announced four suspensions following the benches-clearing brawl between the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Tuesday night. Boston’s first baseman Willson Contreras and Washington starter Cade Cavalli were each handed seven-game suspensions along with undisclosed fines for their involvement in the altercation during the fourth inning.

The incident occurred during Washington’s 8-1 win when Cavalli struck out Contreras on a full-count pitch. Cavalli shouted “Sit down, boy,” prompting Contreras to charge the mound and throw his batting helmet at him. This action led to a full-scale fight as both teams’ benches and bullpens emptied onto the field.

In addition to Contreras and Cavalli, two other players received suspensions. Nationals right-hander Miles Mikolas was given a five-game suspension, and Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton received a three-game suspension. Both players were fined undisclosed amounts and were ejected from the game due to their involvement in the conflict.

All four players are set to begin their suspensions on Friday. The Red Sox are scheduled to start a three-game series in Anaheim, while the Nationals will host the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boston might face more immediate consequences as Contreras will miss an entire week, while Cavalli and Mikolas are expected to miss only one turn in the pitching rotation.

Cavalli expressed regret on Wednesday, acknowledging the weight of his words and stating that the incident kept him awake at night due to the poor example it set for young fans. The Nationals have also discussed the matter with him. Meanwhile, Contreras has had an emotional few days, having been ejected for arguing a call in a previous game and dealing with stress from issues affecting his home country of Venezuela.

Any potential appeals by the players could delay the suspensions until MLB completes its review process.
