Mount Sinai Faces Subpoena for Gender-Related Patient Records

3 weeks ago 0

The Mount Sinai Health System has acknowledged receipt of a grand jury subpoena seeking information about adolescent patients who received gender-related care. This announcement follows confirmation from a hospital spokesperson on Friday.

This development positions Mount Sinai as the second Manhattan hospital to disclose such federal scrutiny regarding gender-transition treatments for minors. The Trump administration has objected to these treatments, citing concerns for the welfare of impressionable adolescents.

NYU Langone, the first hospital system to reveal such an investigation, mentioned last month it had received a subpoena. The request demanded data to identify each patient under 18 who had undergone gender-related care since 2020. Both subpoenas were issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, as per information shared by the hospitals.

On Friday, Lucia Lee, a spokeswoman for Mount Sinai, expressed the hospital’s dedication to patient privacy in a statement. She provided limited information about the hospital’s stance on challenging the subpoena but emphasized plans to share only non-identifiable information if obliged to produce records. This would involve removing all details that could identify patients.

The statement further clarified that New York law necessitates that the hospital informs affected patients if their records must be disclosed.
